Chapter 5 - The Useless Victory

Frank didn't lunge for the paper. He didn't yell. He didn't try to wrestle the fraudulent document out of his daughter's hands.
Instead, he just stood there in his dark suit, looking at Brenda with an expression of profound, chilling pity. He let her gloat. He let her revel in the feeling of absolute victory for exactly ten agonizing seconds.
"You think you're so smart, Brenda," Frank said, his natural breathing completely steady. "You spent months manipulating our lawyers, sneaking into our home office, tracking the primary estate accounts, and drafting that power-of-attorney."
Brenda smirked, waving the paper. "It worked, didn't it? The house, the cars, the primary checking accounts—they all belong to me now. By tomorrow morning, I'll have the authority to legally evict you."
"You did successfully steal the primary estate accounts," Frank nodded slowly, completely unbothered by her threat. "But there's something you clearly missed during all your desperate snooping."
Brenda’s smirk faltered slightly. She lowered the paper, her slow eye movement tracking her father's hands as he casually reached into the inner breast pocket of his tailored suit jacket.
"What are you talking about?" Brenda demanded, a sudden, creeping seed of doubt taking root in her stomach. "I saw the financial ledgers. I know exactly what you're worth."
