Chapter 1 - The Child at the Gate

The heavy iron gates of the massive estate loomed tall under the bleak, gray daylight. The air was freezing, and the stone path leading up to the grand fountain was completely deserted. Standing alone in the middle of the desolate driveway was an 8-year-old girl named Ellie. Her oversized clothes were covered in dirt, and her small hands were bruised from the freezing cold.

But Ellie didn't look scared. She stood completely still, clutching a bundle tightly to her chest. It was a baby, wrapped in a faded, filthy blanket. Tucked against the blanket was a crumpled, faded polaroid photo.

Suddenly, the heavy roar of a luxury SUV engines echoed down the stone path. Three black vehicles pulled up to the gates.

Roman, the ruthless head of the city's most feared crime syndicate, stepped out of the center car. He was in his 40s, his dark hair slicked back, wearing a tailored black suit that radiated sheer power. Two armed guards in identical black suits flanked him immediately.

Roman stopped in his tracks, staring down at the dirty little girl blocking his gates.

Ellie didn't back away. She stepped forward, holding the bundled baby and the polaroid photo up toward the towering mafia boss.
