Chapter 2 - The Stolen Stare

Roman froze. The two armed guards behind him instinctively reached for their weapons, unsure if this was some kind of bizarre ambush, but Roman raised a single, commanding hand to stop them.
The ruthless boss looked down at the tiny, dirty child. He didn't yell. He didn't order her away. Instead, he took a slow, deliberate step closer.
Roman’s cold, calculating eyes moved from Ellie’s dirty face down to the faded polaroid photo she was holding against the baby’s blanket. It was a picture of Roman himself, taken almost two years ago, standing next to a beautiful woman with long, dark hair.
Roman’s heart slammed against his ribs. His breath hitched. He looked from the photo to the tiny, sleeping face of the baby wrapped in the filthy blanket. The infant had the exact same striking, dark features as him.
"Whose baby?" Roman whispered, his voice completely devoid of its usual terrifying authority. He was stunned. Paralyzed.
Ellie looked up at him, her chest heaving breathlessly. She had been running for hours, terrified that the people who threw the baby away were going to catch her.

"Yours," Ellie replied.
