Chapter 7 - The Cornered Rat

Cassandra’s breathing became ragged. She took a step backward up the stairs, shaking her head frantically.

"She's lying!" Cassandra shrieked, completely losing her elegant composure. "Roman, you're going to believe a homeless brat over your future wife?! She’s probably a spy from another family! She’s trying to frame me!"

Roman didn't yell. He didn't need to. The quietness of his fury was infinitely more terrifying.

"I didn't tell you the baby was in a dumpster, Cassandra," Roman said, his words slicing through the air like a razor. "I just said he was found in an alleyway. But you knew exactly where he was."

Cassandra gasped, realizing she had just trapped herself in her own panicked lies.

Roman slowly walked up the first three steps of the grand staircase. "Elena didn't just disappear eighteen months ago, did she? You found her. You hid her. And when she had my son, you decided to get rid of the evidence before our wedding."

Cassandra backed up until her back hit the wall. Tears of genuine terror spilled down her face. "Roman, I had to! My father demanded the alliance! If you knew you had a bastard child, you would have called off the wedding! I did it for us!"
