Chapter 6 - The Blanket

Cassandra let out a small, condescending laugh. "A gift? From a street rat? Roman, really, you shouldn't let people like this inside the estate. They carry diseases."

"Bring him in," Roman commanded, not taking his eyes off his fiancée.

The heavy mahogany doors of the study opened. The head guard stepped out, holding the baby wrapped in a warm, clean blanket. The infant was wide awake, his striking dark eyes staring around the grand foyer.

Cassandra froze on the staircase.

The condescending smile instantly vanished from her perfect face. Her manicured hand gripped the wooden banister so hard her knuckles turned entirely white. The color drained from her cheeks as she stared at the baby she thought she had successfully murdered just three hours ago.

"Where... where did that come from?" Cassandra stammered, her voice suddenly high and tight with sheer panic.

"An alleyway," Roman replied softly, his voice echoing menacingly in the large room. "Behind the church on 5th Street. Someone threw him in a dumpster. Isn't that right, Ellie?"

Ellie stepped out from behind Roman. She pointed a dirty finger directly up at Cassandra. "That’s the lady. She was wearing a white coat."
