Chapter 5 - The Snake in the House

Roman walked through the grand doors of his mansion, his mind racing with a deadly clarity. Ellie followed closely behind him, clutching the polaroid photo.
If Cassandra had thrown the baby away, it meant she knew about Elena. It meant she knew about the child. And if she knew about the child, she likely knew exactly what happened to the woman Roman had loved and lost.
As they entered the lavish, marble-floored foyer, Cassandra herself was walking down the grand staircase. She was wearing a stunning designer dress, her shiny blonde hair perfectly styled. She looked like a picture of absolute, innocent elegance.
"Roman, darling," Cassandra smiled, her voice dripping with fake sweetness. She paused halfway down the stairs, noticing the dirty little girl standing behind him. "Who on earth is that filthy child? Did one of the maids bring their kid to work?"
Roman didn't smile back. He didn't walk toward her to greet her. He stood dead still at the bottom of the stairs, his hands resting casually in the pockets of his black suit.
