Chapter 4 - The Corporate Voice

The heavy, toxic silence in the courtyard was absolute, save for the gentle rustling of the decorative topiary trees in the afternoon breeze.

Ethan crossed his arms over his burgundy shirt, waiting for Meredith to finally break down and cry. He wanted her to drop to her knees and beg for her luxurious lifestyle back.

But suddenly, a sound broke the silence.

It didn't come from Meredith. It came from the shattered smartphone lying on the marble floor.

"Meredith? Can you hear me?"

The voice was faint, transmitting through the surviving speaker of the cracked device, but it was incredibly distinct. It was a deep, composed, and undeniably authoritative American male voice.

Judith’s arrogant, triumphant expression instantly froze. She looked down at the broken phone, sheer confusion washing over her wrinkled face.

Ethan’s furious posture stiffened. He recognized that voice immediately. It was Graham Holt, the most ruthless, powerful, and terrifying senior executive on the Board of Directors for Ethan’s own corporation. Graham was a man who absolutely never made personal phone calls unless billions of dollars were actively on the line.

Up on the balcony, Vanessa stopped laughing. She leaned forward in her mint-green satin gown, her silver high heels clicking against the stone as she suddenly looked incredibly concerned.
