Chapter 3 - The Missing Appointment

The word "son" echoed like a gunshot in the sterile maternity room.

Close-up on Garrett. He became completely, unnervingly still. His confident, arrogant posture shattered in a fraction of a second. He gripped the toddler in his arms slightly tighter, staring at the nurse in absolute, profound confusion. He looked at the pink-and-white flowers on the bedside table. He looked at the baby girl wrapped in the striped hospital blanket in Brooke’s arms.

"Your son?" Garrett asked, his voice cracking, entirely stripped of its cruel authority. "What is she talking about, Brooke? We had a girl."

Close-up on Brooke. She didn't flinch. She looked directly into Garrett’s panicked eyes.

"You missed that appointment, Garrett," Brooke stated, her tone ice-cold.

The air in the room felt instantly heavier. Six months ago, when Brooke was scheduled for her crucial 20-week anatomy scan, Garrett had called her from a "business trip in Miami," claiming his flight was delayed. He swore he was stuck in a boardroom. But Brooke had already seen the credit card charges for a luxury suite in Aspen, booked under Kendra’s name.

He didn't miss a flight. He skipped his wife's ultrasound to take his mistress skiing.

"I was working," Garrett stammered, taking a step forward, completely abandoning Kendra’s side. "Brooke, what do you mean, 'your son'? Are there two babies? Did you have twins?!"

Medium shot. Brooke completely ignored his frantic questions. She slowly turned her head away from her panicking husband and looked calmly at the nurse.
