Chapter 2 - The Name on the Birth Certificate

Garrett’s cruel declaration hung heavily in the air. He had spent the last nine months ignoring Brooke’s pregnancy, secretly planning his grand exit to start a new life with Kendra and his toddler son. He thought showing up to the hospital today with his "real" family would utterly break Brooke's spirit. He wanted to humiliate her so entirely that she would sign the divorce papers without fighting for a single dime of his company.

Kendra brought her manicured hand up to her mouth, covering a smug, victorious smile. She looked at Brooke like she was nothing but discarded trash.

But Brooke didn't cry. She didn't scream.

Close-up on Brooke. She cradled her baby securely against her chest, her breathing remaining perfectly steady. She looked down at the tiny, innocent face of her daughter, feeling an overwhelming wave of protective love. Then, her dark eyes slowly lifted, locking directly onto her husband's arrogant face.

"She'll have mine," Brooke replied smoothly.

Her voice wasn't shaking. It was dripping with a quiet, lethal confidence that made the smug smile completely vanish from Kendra's face. Kendra’s hands slowly lowered from her mouth, her eyes darting nervously toward Garrett. This wasn't the hysterical, broken reaction they had anticipated.

The nurse, who had been standing quietly by the bedside adjusting the monitors, suddenly stopped. She looked at Brooke, offering a small, knowing nod.
