Chapter 1 - The Uninvited Moving Truck

The bright afternoon sun poured through the coastal windows of Rachel’s modest North Carolina beach cottage, illuminating a scene of absolute, suffocating betrayal. It was supposed to be a simple housewarming party. Instead, Rachel stood completely frozen beside her dining table, her knuckles turning white as she gripped a thick manila document folder.
A massive commercial moving truck was parked right on her front lawn.
Inside the sunlit living room, her mother, Patricia, was cheerfully leading a group of confused relatives down the short hallway. Patricia’s neatly styled blonde-gray hair caught the light as she adjusted her expensive handbag over her cream blouse. She acted exactly like the lady of the manor, completely ignoring the sheer tension radiating from her 33-year-old daughter.
Patricia stopped at the open doorway of Rachel’s beautiful, ocean-facing guest bedroom. She smiled warmly at the aunts and uncles, gesturing gracefully inside.
“This will be our room,” Patricia announced brightly, as if she had just bought the property herself.
