Chapter 2 - The Arrogant Golden Child

The relatives murmured politely, exchanging uneasy glances. They knew Rachel had bought this cottage entirely on her own, yet Patricia was talking about redecorating the walls and expanding the closet.
Leaning casually against the granite kitchen counter was Rachel’s older brother, Jason. The 30-year-old golden child wore a simple gray T-shirt and jeans. He didn't look apologetic. He looked entirely smug. He was tapping away on his phone, completely unbothered by the hostile takeover happening in his sister’s living room.
Rachel took a slow, steady breath. She picked up the heavy document folder from the table and took a few calm, deliberate steps toward the group.
Patricia turned toward her, her confident smile never faltering. She expected Rachel to lower her head and submit, just like she had done her entire life. She expected the quiet, dutiful daughter to simply accept her fate to avoid causing a scene in front of the extended family.
“Tell everyone when I agreed to let you move in,” Rachel said. Her voice wasn't loud, but the cold, steady authority in it made the entire room drop into dead silence.
Jason let out a loud, mocking sigh. He lowered his phone, giving his sister a condescending look, and gestured lazily out the coastal window toward the massive moving truck on the lawn.
