Chapter 6 - The Line in the Sand

The tension in the living room was so thick it was hard to breathe. The relatives were completely paralyzed, watching the beautiful afternoon dissolve into a nightmare.
Rachel didn't yell. She didn't scream. Her slow, calculated eye movement shifted from her cowardly father, to her arrogant brother, and finally settled on her fiercely possessive mother. The years of being treated like a second-class citizen in her own family vanished. The exhausted, people-pleasing ER nurse was dead.
“No,” Rachel said simply.
Patricia’s fake, confident smile faltered for a fraction of a second. She took a step toward Rachel, lowering her voice into a sharp, threatening hiss so the relatives wouldn't hear.
“Do not embarrass me in front of the family, Rachel Bennett,” Patricia warned, her eyes flashing with pure malice. “We have nowhere else to go. You will open that gate, and you will welcome us in, or I swear to God, you will never have a family again.”
Rachel looked at the woman who gave birth to her. She felt absolutely no pity.
