Chapter 3 - The Nurse's Sanctuary

The sheer audacity of Jason’s words hung in the salty afternoon air. The relatives stared at the family in absolute shock.

For ten years, Rachel had worked grueling 80-hour weeks in the emergency room. She had sacrificed her holidays, her sleep, and her youth, saving every single penny to escape her incredibly toxic, demanding family. This modest beach cottage was her ultimate reward. It was her sanctuary, entirely paid for with her own blood, sweat, and tears.

Patricia, on the other hand, had never respected Rachel’s boundaries. To Patricia, Rachel’s money and property were just extensions of the family’s assets—assets that usually went to bailing out Jason.

“You sold your house?” Aunt Martha whispered, horrified. “Without telling her?”

“Rachel is a single woman,” Patricia said smoothly, waving her hand as if swatting away a fly. “She doesn't need three bedrooms all to herself. It’s entirely selfish. Jason’s lease is up, and your father’s knees are getting bad. It just makes sense for us to consolidate and live here as a family. We are just moving our things in today.”

Rachel stared at her father, Robert. The 60-year-old man in the navy polo shirt couldn't even look his daughter in the eye. He stared down at his khaki trousers, utterly ashamed but too cowardly to stop his wife's insane plan.
