Patricia’s excuse about "consolidating as a family" was a beautifully dressed lie. Rachel knew exactly why the moving truck was parked on her lawn, and she knew exactly why her parents were suddenly homeless.
Jason hadn't just reached the end of his lease. He had secretly filed for bankruptcy. Three months ago, Jason took out a massive, high-interest business loan for a crypto startup that completely crashed. He owed hundreds of thousands of dollars to very aggressive creditors.
Instead of letting their golden boy face the consequences of his own arrogant mistakes, Patricia and Robert had secretly sold their sprawling suburban home. They used every last cent of their equity to pay off Jason’s debts and keep him out of federal court.
But that left them with absolutely nothing. No house, no savings, and no retirement.
So, Patricia concocted a cruel, brilliant plan. They would simply hijack Rachel’s fully paid-off beach house. They would move Jason into the master bedroom, take the guest room for themselves, and force Rachel to continue working as a nurse to pay their living expenses.
