Chapter 9 - The Fall of the Golden Child

The relatives immediately backed away from Patricia and Jason as if they were infected with a disease. The murmurs of shock turned into vocal, absolute disgust.
“You tried to steal her home?” Aunt Martha yelled at Patricia. “After selling your own to pay for his gambling debts? You are sick, Patricia!”
“Rachel, please,” Robert finally spoke, his voice cracking with desperate tears as he stepped forward. “Please, he’s your brother. Don't send him to prison. We were just desperate.”
“You were greedy,” Rachel corrected him coldly. “And you are no longer my family.”
Outside the coastal windows, the moving truck suddenly started its engine. The drivers, realizing a massive legal dispute was happening and that they weren't going to get paid, began backing out of the driveway, taking all of Patricia and Robert’s worldly possessions with them.
“No! Wait! My furniture!” Patricia shrieked, running toward the window in absolute hysterics.
But the sound of the retreating truck was quickly drowned out by a much more terrifying noise. Faintly at first, then growing rapidly louder, the piercing wail of police sirens echoed down the coastal highway, heading straight for Rachel’s cottage.
