Chapter 2 - The Silent Traitors

The devastating words dropped like a bomb in the middle of the sacred hall. Chloe physically recoiled, covering her mouth with her trembling, lace-gloved hand in absolute shock. She turned her head slowly, praying that her groom, Liam, would look confused. She prayed he would call Marin a liar and rush to comfort his bride.
But Liam didn't look confused at all. He just looked incredibly tense. He clenched his jaw, shifting his weight uncomfortably in his expensive black tuxedo, completely refusing to meet Chloe’s devastated gaze.
A sickening, dizzying wave of nausea washed over Chloe. It was true. The man she was about to pledge her life to had impregnated her own sister.
Desperate for a lifeline, Chloe turned her heartbroken gaze toward the front row. But what she saw there completely shattered her soul into a thousand unfixable pieces. Her mother, wearing a dark blue lace evening dress, was staring at the floor, her face pale with terror. Her father, looking sharp in his dark gray suit, was rubbing the back of his neck, sweating profusely and looking profoundly ashamed.
They weren't shocked. They weren't jumping up to defend her honor.
"Did you know?" Chloe whispered, hot tears finally spilling fast down her cheeks.
Her father swallowed hard, refusing to look her in the eye. The devastation on Chloe’s face slowly melted away. The warmth in her eyes died completely, replaced by a deep, icy, unimaginable betrayal as she stared at her parents.
