Chapter 2 - The Cream Envelope

The cinematic realism of the heavy, suffocating tension completely paralyzed the festive dining room.

Carter placed the sealed cream envelope gently on the pristine white tablecloth right next to Ray's bourbon glass. He met his father's mocking eyes without raising his voice, his expression completely composed despite the visible hurt he had endured his entire life.

"Happy birthday to me, Dad," Carter stated smoothly, his voice echoing perfectly across the dead-silent room. He turned to the shocked relatives. "Have a great evening, everyone."

Carter took Shelby’s hand, his grip firm and steady, and they walked out of the dining room toward the nearby hallway.

Ray scoffed loudly, shaking his head. He genuinely believed the envelope contained a pathetic birthday letter, or perhaps a desperate plea for financial help from his "failure" of a son. He picked up the cream envelope, his arrogant smirk still plastered across his face, and tore the seal open.

A close-up captured Ray pulling out the single sheet of thick, legally watermarked paper.

He read the first line. The lingering, cruel smile on his face violently vanished. All the color instantly drained from his weathered cheeks, leaving him looking like a terrified ghost. He physically stopped breathing.

His hand began to shake uncontrollably. The crystal bourbon glass slipped from his fingers, lowering heavily to the table with a loud clink.

👉 Ray’s eyes lifted sharply toward the doorway Carter had just passed through, absolute panic destroying his mind.
