Chapter 10 - The Quiet Exit

Barry flinched as if he had been physically struck. The truth of Dallas's words cut deeper than any insult ever could. For ten years, Barry had valued status and money over his own flesh and blood. And now, standing in front of the most successful man he would ever meet, Barry realized he had completely lost his son.
Dallas didn't wait for an apology. He knew he was never going to get a genuine one.
He walked over to Abby, wrapping his arms around his sister in a warm, protective hug. "I'm sorry he turned out to be a fraud, Abs. But you dodged a massive bullet. Call me later, okay? We'll go get dinner. Anywhere you want."
Abby hugged him back tightly, tears of relief in her eyes. "Thank you, Dallas. I love you."
"Love you too," Dallas smiled.
He pulled back, adjusted his plain navy polo shirt, and walked calmly toward the patio gate. He didn't gloat. He didn't demand respect from his father. He simply walked away, leaving Barry standing alone by the barbecue grill, forced to live with the bitter, humiliating reality of his own arrogance.
