Chapter 2 - The Handshake

Dallas was 34 years old, wearing a plain navy polo shirt, dark jeans, and a practical, inexpensive wristwatch. He had short brown hair and neatly trimmed stubble. Despite being publicly humiliated by his own father the moment he walked into the yard, Dallas didn't look angry. He looked entirely calm and quietly confident.

He walked over to his sister, Abby, who was wearing a pale blue summer dress. Abby smiled nervously, trying to diffuse the immediate tension her father had just created. She lightly touched Keegan’s arm to get his attention.

"Keegan, this is Dallas," Abby said softly. "My older brother."

Keegan turned around, still holding the barbecue tongs, a confident, slightly arrogant smile plastered on his face as he prepared to greet the family disappointment.

But the moment Keegan’s eyes locked onto Dallas’s face, his smile completely vanished.

It didn't just fade—it was entirely erased. Keegan’s jaw tightened so hard the muscles in his neck strained. His face lost all of its color in a fraction of a second, turning a sickly, pale white. He stopped breathing. He carefully, almost mechanically, rested the metal tongs on the grill’s side shelf before accepting Dallas’s offered hand.

Dallas gripped Keegan’s hand firmly. He didn't blink. He just offered a small, terrifyingly composed smile.
