Chapter 7 - The Embezzlement

"Keegan isn't my right-hand man," Dallas said quietly. "In fact, I've only met Keegan once before today."
Abby looked at her boyfriend, completely confused. "Keegan, what is he talking about? You told me you were running the Midwest division."
Keegan squeezed his eyes shut. "Abby, please..."
"I met Keegan three weeks ago during a closed-door internal audit," Dallas stated, entirely ignoring Keegan’s pathetic plea. "My forensic accountants noticed a massive discrepancy in the Midwest division's logistics budget. Someone had been creating phantom vendor invoices and wiring the corporate funds into private offshore accounts."
Barry stopped breathing. The paper plate in his hand dropped to the grass.
"It was almost two million dollars over the course of eight months," Dallas continued, his voice echoing perfectly in the silent backyard. "We traced the IP addresses. We traced the offshore routing numbers. They all led directly back to an Executive Vice President named Keegan."
Abby let out a sharp, horrified cry. She stumbled away from her boyfriend, wrapping her arms around herself. "You... you stole from his company?"

"I was going to put it back!" Keegan suddenly shrieked, completely losing his corporate composure. He looked at Dallas with wild, desperate eyes. "The crypto market crashed! I was just borrowing it to cover my margins! I swear to God, Dallas, I was going to pay it all back!"
