Chapter 5 - The House of Cards

The tension around the barbecue grill was suddenly suffocating. The late-afternoon sunlight felt harsh and unforgiving.

Keegan wiped a bead of cold sweat from his forehead. He knew exactly who Dallas was. And he knew that if he lied right now to protect his own ego, his entire career would be completely destroyed before the sun came up on Monday morning.

"No, Barry," Keegan whispered, his voice trembling so badly he had to grip the edge of the picnic table to steady himself. "Dallas doesn't clean the toilets."

Barry frowned, clearly annoyed that his joke was being ruined. "Then what does he do? Fix the AC?"

Keegan slowly shook his head, looking like a man walking to his own execution. He couldn't even look at Abby anymore.

"Dallas is... Dallas is the primary majority shareholder of OmniCorp," Keegan stammered, the words physically hurting him to say out loud. "He's the Chairman of the Board of Directors. He owns the building. He owns the company."

The entire patio went dead silent. The crackling of the charcoal grill was the only sound left in the world.
