Chapter 4 - The Silent Panic

Keegan’s heart was hammering so hard against his ribs he thought everyone on the patio could hear it. He looked at Barry's arrogant, expectant face, and then he looked at Abby, who was watching him with gentle curiosity.
Keegan had spent the last three months building a flawless, impressive facade for Abby and her family. He told them he was a self-made corporate genius. He told them he was the youngest Executive Vice President in his company's history. He had let Barry worship the ground he walked on, completely feeding into the older man's toxic need for status and wealth.
But Keegan wasn't a self-made genius. And he certainly wasn't the boss.
"We... we work in the same building," Keegan finally choked out, his voice completely devoid of the smooth confidence he had displayed just five minutes ago.
Barry let out a loud, barking laugh, slapping his knee. "I knew it! I told you, Abby! He cleans the toilets at Keegan's corporate headquarters! Dallas, you really need to do something with your life before you embarrass this family any further."
Dallas slowly screwed the cap back onto his water bottle. He didn't look at his father. He kept his dark eyes locked entirely on Keegan.
