When adults finally explained the property structure years later, Livia’s reaction was wonderfully anticlimactic.

“One day this house may become yours.”
Livia frowned.
“The whole thing?”
“Yes.”
“That’s too much house.”
Catherine laughed.
Livia looked toward Alessandro.
“Can I just have my room?”
He nearly cried.
Because that was all she had ever wanted.
Not ownership.
Not control.
Her room.
Her father.
Rosalie.
Her toys.
