The investigators needed Robert’s own account.
Because he could not speak, a speech-language pathologist supervised the communication.
No Grace guiding.
No Daniel.
No Vanessa.
Robert used a standardized yes/no system first.
Was Vanessa behind your wheelchair?
Yes.
Did you ask her to push you?
No.
Did Grace push you?
No.
Did Grace stop the wheelchair?
Yes.
Then came the letter board.
Slowly.
Painfully.
Robert spelled:
S-H-E T-O-L-D M-E G-R-A-C-E W-O-U-L-D B-E G-O-N-E.
The specialist read it back.
“She told me Grace would be gone?”
Robert nodded.
Then continued.
A-F-T-E-R T-O-D-A-Y.
After today.
Daniel felt sick.
Vanessa had told Robert the outcome before staging the event.
Grace would be gone.
The shove had not been random rage.
