Chapter 3 - Robert Had Been Trying to Change One Important Document
Three weeks before the staircase incident, Robert asked Grace for his letter board.
The process took nearly forty minutes.
He spelled:
L-A-W-Y-E-R.
Grace called Robert’s longtime estate attorney, Martin Ellis.
Vanessa overheard.
That evening she confronted Daniel.
“Your father is too frail for lawyers.”
Daniel barely looked up from his laptop.
“What does he want?”
“Grace won’t say.”
“Then let Dad handle it.”
Vanessa became irritated.
“He can barely communicate.”
Daniel answered:
“He can still make decisions.”
That should have ended it.
Instead, it frightened Vanessa.
Because Robert had recently discovered something about a power-of-attorney document signed six months earlier.
The document named Daniel as primary agent for financial matters.
That was normal.
But buried inside a later amendment was a provision allowing Vanessa to act as alternate agent if Daniel was unavailable.
Robert did not remember approving that amendment.
Grace did not remember witnessing it.
And Martin, the longtime attorney, had not prepared it.
Someone else had.
Robert wanted it revoked immediately.
Not because he hated Vanessa.
Because he did not trust a document he could not remember signing.
Grace helped him communicate that.
