Chapter 2 - Grace Had Been Teaching Robert to Speak Without a Voice

Daniel did not touch Vanessa.
Not then.
The urge was there.
He hated himself for that too.
Minutes earlier, he had attacked the wrong person because rage arrived faster than thought.
He refused to repeat the same mistake.
Instead he moved directly to Robert.
“Dad.”
Robert’s eyes filled.
Daniel crouched beside the wheelchair.
“Did Vanessa push you?”
Robert pointed at Vanessa again.
Then nodded once.
Daniel’s stomach turned.
Vanessa finally spoke.
“He’s confused.”
Daniel looked at her.
“What?”
“He’s seventy. He’s had a stroke. Grace has been putting things in his head for months.”
Grace, still holding one hand against her slapped cheek, stared at her.
“That’s why you wanted me gone.”
Vanessa said nothing.
That sentence became the first piece.
Grace had cared for Robert for five years, including the two since his stroke.
Robert had lost spoken language, but not comprehension.
Doctors had confirmed that repeatedly.
His mind remained largely intact.
Speech was the damage.
Grace refused to treat silence as absence.
She developed a communication system with him.
Yes/no gestures.
Pointing.
Picture boards.
Then a letter board.
Robert could slowly identify letters with his finger while Grace wrote them down.
It took patience.
A single sentence could take twenty minutes.
Vanessa hated it.
At first Daniel thought she was simply impatient.
She often said:
“This is exhausting him.”
Or:
“Dad doesn’t need to make every little decision anymore.”
Grace always answered the same way.
“If he can communicate a decision, it’s still his.”
Daniel had heard those arguments.
He had never understood what they were really about.
Now he did.
Robert’s silence was useful to Vanessa.

Grace kept giving him a way around it.
