Chapter 14 - Grace Returned Only Because Robert Asked Her To

Months later, after the immediate legal process stabilized, Robert asked for Grace.
Not through Daniel.
Through the letter board.
G-R-A-C-E C-O-M-E H-O-M-E?
Daniel did not call her immediately.
He first made sure the request was Robert’s and not his own desire to repair guilt.
Then he contacted Grace.
She hesitated.
“I don’t know if I can work there again.”
Daniel answered:
“I understand.”
Robert’s request was relayed.
Grace agreed to visit.
Not return.
Visit.
When she entered the foyer, Robert began crying.
Grace knelt beside him.
He pointed carefully toward letters.
S-O-R-R-Y.
Grace shook her head.
“You didn’t do anything.”
Robert pointed again.
S-T-A-Y?
Grace closed her eyes.
Then answered:
“For today.”
That was enough.
Weeks later she returned part-time.
Then eventually resumed caring for Robert under a new employment arrangement with independent oversight and stronger boundaries.
Not because Daniel deserved another chance.
Because Robert asked for her.

That distinction mattered.
