Chapter 9 - Daniel Finally Asked Why Vanessa Needed Grace Fired So Badly

He confronted Vanessa with an attorney present.

No shouting.

No physical confrontation.

Daniel had already learned what happened when anger became action.

He placed the copied documents on the table.

“Why does this say ‘Remove G. before transition’?”

Vanessa stared.

“I didn’t write that.”

“Did you know about it?”

“No.”

“Did you prepare the care-management proposal?”

“I helped.”

“Why?”

“Because your father is declining.”

“He communicates.”

“Barely.”

Daniel leaned forward.

“Barely is not the same as incapable.”

Vanessa looked away.

That answer said more than words.

Daniel continued.

“You needed Grace gone because Grace proved Dad could still make decisions.”

Vanessa snapped:

“I needed Grace gone because she controls him.”

Daniel almost laughed.

“How?”

“She tells everyone what he means.”

“No. She writes what he points to.”

“She influences him.”

“Then why did he point at you in the foyer?”

Silence.

That question finally broke through Vanessa’s defenses.

Her eyes filled.

Not with guilt.

With frustration.

“He was never going to trust me.”

Daniel answered:

“After what you did, why should he?”
