Chapter 5 - Lisa Had Seen Vanessa Practice the Lie Before
Lisa could not speak, but she understood almost everything around her.
That was another fact Vanessa underestimated.
Two days after the staircase incident, a child psychologist who specialized in nonverbal communication met with Lisa.
No leading questions.
No adults coaching.
She was given picture cards.
Drawings.
A small toy wheelchair.
Figures representing people in the house.
The psychologist asked:
“Show me what happened.”
Lisa selected the Vanessa figure.
Placed it behind the wheelchair.
Pushed.
Then selected Grace.
Moved Grace toward the chair.
Stopped it.
Then she picked up the Daniel figure.
Made it kick the Grace figure.
The psychologist recorded the sequence carefully.
Then Lisa did something nobody had asked her to do.
She took the Vanessa figure.
Pointed it at the Grace figure.
Then tapped a picture card representing BLAME.
Daniel watched from behind observation glass.
His face went numb.
Lisa had not merely witnessed the shove.
She understood what happened afterward.
Vanessa blamed Grace.
Then Daniel punished Grace.
