Chapter 4 - The Hidden Recorder

Beneath the white hospital blanket, resting on Abigail’s lap, wasn't just torn fabric. She was clutching a small, heavy black digital audio recorder.

"They didn't just beat me, Mom," Abigail wept, her chest heaving with trauma. "They locked me in the basement of the estate for three days. They starved me. I only got out because one of the new maids felt sorry for me and unbolted the door."

Rachel’s blood turned to freezing ice. "Why? Why did they lock you down there?"

"Because I found out what they were doing," Abigail choked out, handing the digital recorder to her mother. "I was looking for our marriage certificate in his home office. I found a hidden wall safe. It wasn't locked properly. Inside, there were banking documents and a second cell phone."

Rachel frowned, her tactical mind immediately snapping to attention. "What kind of documents?"

"Nicholas isn't just an investment banker," Abigail whispered, terrified they were being overheard. "He’s laundering millions of dollars for the Barone crime syndicate. He’s washing drug money through his legitimate corporate accounts. Patricia knows everything. She’s the one managing the offshore shell companies."

The cinematic realization crashed over Rachel.

Her daughter hadn't just married an abusive narcissist. She had married a high-level financial criminal working for one of the most dangerous cartels in the country.

"When Nicholas caught me looking at the files, he snapped," Abigail continued, sobbing heavily. "He beat me. Patricia stood there and watched. Then they threw me in the basement while they tried to figure out how to stage my suicide."
