Chapter 6 - The Tactical Maneuver

Rachel stood up from the hospital bed, her immaculate Army dress uniform radiating unstoppable power.
"We don't go to the local police," Rachel said smoothly, pulling a heavily encrypted, military-issue smartphone from her pocket. "We go to the federal government."
Rachel dialed a classified number. It rang twice before a deep voice answered.
"General Vance," Rachel spoke crisply into the phone. "This is Colonel Gardner. I need an immediate, off-the-books favor from your contacts at the FBI's Organized Crime Division. I have undeniable audio evidence of a massive money-laundering operation tied directly to the Barone syndicate."
The line went silent for a moment. "Where is the physical proof, Rachel?"
"It's locked in a biometric safe inside the target's estate," Rachel replied, her eyes narrowing. "I need a federal raid team standing by. But I have to get inside the house first to open the safe."
"It’s suicide to go in there alone, Colonel," the General warned. "If they are laundering for the Barones, that house is heavily guarded."
"I won't be alone," Rachel promised, her voice laced with absolute, terrifying confidence. "Just have the tactical units ready when I give the signal."
Rachel hung up the phone. She turned to the attending nurse who had just walked into the room to check Abigail’s vitals.
"My daughter is being transferred to the military hospital at the base," Rachel ordered the nurse. "Under heavy guard. Nobody gets near her."
Abigail grabbed her mother’s hand. "Mom, what are you going to do? Nicholas is going to kill you if you go back to that house!"
Rachel smiled a cold, merciless smile. She unpinned the gold medals from her chest, placing them gently on the bedside table.

"Nicholas is about to find out exactly why they made me a Colonel," Rachel whispered.
