Chapter 5 - The Deadly Confession

"I hit record on his secret burner phone before he dragged me down the stairs," Abigail explained, her voice cracking. "I managed to email the audio file to myself and download it onto this recorder before I ran out of the house."

Rachel didn't hesitate. She pressed play on the small black device.

The sharp hiss of static filled the quiet hospital room, followed instantly by the clear, arrogant voices of Nicholas and Patricia.

"She saw the Cayman accounts, Mother," Nicholas's recorded voice panicked. "If she goes to the police, the cartel will kill us both!"

"Then we don't let her go to the police," Patricia’s voice answered, completely cold and devoid of human empathy. "We keep her in the basement until the bruising goes down. Then, we crush up the oxycodone and force it down her throat. We write a suicide note about her 'depression.' The police will close the case in a day."

The recording clicked off.

The silence that followed was absolute, terrifying, and dripping with imminent, inescapable violence.

Rachel’s jaw locked so tightly the muscles in her neck strained. Her daughter had been hours away from being murdered by her own husband and mother-in-law.

"They took my phone, Mom," Abigail cried. "They still have the original files in the safe. We have to go to the police right now!"

"No," Rachel replied, her voice dropping to a low, demonic whisper.

Abigail looked at her mother in confusion. "Why not?"

"Because the police in this precinct are on the Barone syndicate's payroll," Rachel stated, her military intelligence kicking in. "If we hand this to a dirty cop, it disappears, and you die in a 'car accident' tomorrow."
