Chapter 8 - The Cornered Rats

Upstairs in the home office, Nicholas and Patricia froze in absolute terror.

They had heard the heavy crash of the front door. Nicholas’s jaw was heavily bandaged from the punch he took at the hospital, his arrogant facade completely shattered into a million pieces.

"She got past the guards!" Nicholas panicked, his hands shaking as he frantically shoved stacks of cash and USB drives into a black duffel bag. "Mother, she's going to kill me!"

"Don't be an idiot!" Patricia shrieked, grabbing a heavy silver candlestick from the desk. "She's just one woman! Get your gun, Nicholas! Shoot her as soon as she walks through the door!"

Nicholas scrambled for the pistol in his desk drawer, his hands trembling violently.

The heavy, rhythmic footsteps echoed up the grand staircase.

Rachel didn't try to sneak. She wanted them to hear her coming. She walked slowly down the long, luxurious hallway, her white shirt glowing in the dim lighting.

She reached the closed door of the home office. She didn't turn the knob. She kicked the door open with massive force, splintering the wood.

Nicholas stood behind his desk, raising his trembling pistol. "Stay back, Rachel! I swear to God, I'll shoot you!"

Rachel didn't flinch. She looked at the gun with pure, unadulterated disgust.

"You don't even know how to hold it properly, you pathetic coward," Rachel sneered smoothly.

With blinding speed, Rachel raised her own weapon and fired a single, perfectly aimed shot. The bullet shattered the heavy glass whiskey decanter sitting on the desk right next to Nicholas's hand.

Nicholas shrieked like a feral animal, dropping his gun in pure terror and throwing himself onto the floor, covering his head.
