Chapter 4 - The True Identity

The cinematic tension in the room spiked to a suffocating, paralyzing level.
Lieutenant Rourke physically swallowed hard, his Adam's apple bobbing in his throat. His immaculate service uniform suddenly felt like a suffocating straightjacket.
Evelyn didn't march aggressively. She walked at a measured, controlled pace, completely ignoring the stunned high school students in the bleachers. She stopped directly beside her daughter, placing a warm, protective hand on Sophie's shoulder.
Then, Evelyn slowly turned her intense, calculating gaze toward the man holding the microphone.
"Senior Chief Torres, retired," Evelyn stated, her voice a calm, lethal frequency that demanded absolute respect. "You wanted to speak with me, Lieutenant?"
Rourke’s hands began to shake violently. He quickly lowered the microphone, completely terrified of amplifying his own stuttering, pathetic voice to the crowd.
To understand the absolute, unhinged panic exploding in Rourke’s chest, one had to look at his actual military record. Rourke was a desk officer. He spent his days filing logistics reports and organizing high school recruitment drives. He had never seen a single day of active combat in his entire life.
But Senior Chief Evelyn Torres was an absolute, undisputed legend at the Virginia Beach naval base.
She wasn't a Navy SEAL. She was the highly classified, elite handler for the Naval Special Warfare Canine Unit. For fifteen years, she had deployed directly alongside the most dangerous SEAL teams in the world, jumping out of helicopters and raiding enemy compounds with her tactical dogs.
She had saved more American lives than Rourke had ever met.
