Chapter 9 - The Daughter's Pride

After the massive applause finally died down and the students began to file out of the bleachers for their next class, Sophie rushed across the polished court and threw her arms tightly around her mother’s neck.
"Thank you," Sophie whispered, burying her face in Evelyn’s navy polo shirt. "I was so scared he was going to make everyone think I was a liar."
"You never have to be scared of men like him, Sophie," Evelyn replied softly, hugging her daughter with fierce, unbreakable protection. "Arrogant men use volume to hide their weakness. True power doesn't need to scream."
Captain Vance walked over, smiling warmly at the mother and daughter.
"You handled that perfectly, Evelyn," Captain Vance said, shaking her hand. "Rourke will be permanently reassigned to a basement filing depot in Alaska by the end of the week. He will never speak to a civilian student again."
"Thank you, Mitchell," Evelyn nodded respectfully. "I appreciate you making the drive down here."
"I wouldn't have missed it for the world," Vance replied, looking down at Sophie. "Your mother saved my life in Kandahar ten years ago, kid. If she calls, I answer."
Sophie’s eyes widened in sheer, beautiful realization. Her mother wasn't just a veteran; she was a living, breathing guardian angel for the most powerful men in the military.
