Chapter 5 - The Humiliating Correction

"My daughter said I served with the SEAL teams, Lieutenant," Evelyn corrected coldly, her voice echoing with absolute, unquestionable authority. "Because I did."
The entire gymnasium was completely, suffocatingly silent. Even the massive working dogs sat perfectly still, completely obedient to the tension in the room.
"She is sixteen years old," Evelyn continued, staring dead into Rourke's panicking eyes. "She doesn't understand the complex nuances of classified deployment rosters. But she knows that her mother spent fifteen years jumping out of perfectly good aircraft at 2 AM in hostile territory."
Evelyn took a single, deliberate step closer to the trembling officer.
"You, on the other hand, are a commissioned officer in the United States Navy," Evelyn whispered, leaning in slightly so only the front row of students could hear the venom in her voice. "You have access to the base registry. You knew exactly who I was when you saw my name on the parent volunteer list this morning."
Rourke physically staggered backward. "Senior Chief, I swear, it was just a misunderstanding."
"It wasn't a misunderstanding," Evelyn stated clinically, completely stripping him of his excuses. "You saw an opportunity to use your rank to humiliate a civilian teenager in front of her peers just to make yourself feel powerful. You are an absolute embarrassment to that uniform."
