Chapter 2 - The Strange Scent

The heavy, cinematic tension in the dining room was completely suffocating.
Frank held his unresponsive, pale son tightly against his charcoal suit. The terrifying, arrogant composure of the untouchable crime boss completely vanished. He was hyperventilating, holding the little boy's face.
The seven heavily armed capos sitting around the table violently shifted in their chairs, exchanging nervous, panicked glances. They had never seen their ruthless boss completely lose control.
"Call the doctor!" Frank shrieked like a feral animal, glaring at his men. "Now!"
While the imposing men scrambled for their encrypted cell phones, another person was completely frozen in the room.
Helen, the fifty-something estate housekeeper wearing a gray dress and a white apron, had been standing near the wall when the glass shattered. Her hair was pulled back tightly. She was observant, nervous, but incredibly brave.
As Frank screamed for the doctor, Helen immediately dropped to her knees on the polished marble floor with a thick white cloth, instinctively rushing to clean the dangerous shattered glass near the boy's chair.
She began to wipe up the puddle of spilled white milk.
A tight, cinematic close-up captured Helen’s face. She completely paused. Her brow furrowed deeply.

Helen had worked in kitchens and garages her entire life. As she wiped up the milk, she detected a very faint, highly unnatural, sickly sweet chemical scent completely hidden beneath the dairy.
