Chapter 3 - The Lethal Secret

An extreme close-up captured Helen’s trembling hands hovering over the puddle.

She leaned down slightly, taking a tiny, careful sniff of the white cloth. The sickly sweet smell was unmistakable. It wasn't spoiled milk. It wasn't a strange brand of almond milk.

Helen looked up from the puddle, her eyes darting directly toward the pale, sweating, dying seven-year-old boy currently limp in his father's arms.

The horrifying, mind-blowing realization hit her with the force of a nuclear bomb. The private estate doctors were entirely wrong. Lucas didn't have a stomach flu. The child was experiencing acute kidney failure.

The boy's mysterious illness was actually a highly calculated, slow, and methodical poisoning. Someone inside this heavily guarded mansion was actively murdering the boss's only child.

The dining room double doors were violently pushed open.

The private estate doctor, a slick man in a white coat, rushed into the room carrying a medical bag, completely ignoring the broken glass on the floor.

"Step back, Mr. Moretti!" the doctor commanded urgently, reaching for the child. "Get an ambulance ready! His heart rate is dropping!"

Helen didn't stay out of the way. She didn't cower in the background like a normal servant.
