Chapter 1 - The Ultimate Choice

The busy American city sidewalk was bathed in the bright, unforgiving light of a sunny morning. Commuters in expensive suits rushed past the green trees and concrete pavement, staring blankly at their phones, completely ignoring the tragedy unfolding right in front of them.
An elderly woman in her sixties, wearing a tan coat over a white dress and a delicate floral scarf, stumbled wildly. She gasped for air, her face turning pale and slick with a sudden, freezing sweat. With a terrifying gasp, she collapsed onto the hard concrete, desperately clutching her chest in agony.
Dozens of people walked right past her. Nobody stopped.
Except for Julian.
Julian was a ten-year-old boy with short, wavy brown hair, wearing a worn grey zip-up hoodie over a blue t-shirt and dark cargo pants. He was sprinting down the block, a heavy black backpack bouncing against his small shoulders. Inside that backpack was exactly fourteen hundred dollars in cash.
It was his sick mother’s rent money. Their cruel, arrogant landlord had given them a strict deadline: deliver the cash to his corporate office by 9:00 AM sharp, or they would be thrown out onto the street. It was 8:52 AM. Julian was already running late.
But when Julian saw the woman hit the ground, he slammed on the brakes.
His heart hammered against his ribs. He looked down the street toward the towering corporate office building. He looked at the dying woman on the pavement. He knew that stopping meant losing his home.
Julian didn't care. He dropped his heavy black backpack onto the concrete and rushed directly toward the collapsing stranger.
