Chapter 6 - The Private Investigator

Within an hour, Eleanor’s hospital room became a high-tech command center.

Marcus, her fiercely loyal head of security, stood at the foot of her bed with a tablet in his hand. He had immediately bypassed city bureaucracy, accessing the street-level security cameras from the exact intersection where Eleanor had collapsed.

"I found him, Mrs. Vance," Marcus announced, pulling up the high-definition footage.

Eleanor watched the screen. She saw the little boy in the grey hoodie drop his heavy backpack, completely ignoring the deadline he was clearly rushing toward. She watched him hold her hand while dozens of wealthy adults ignored her.

"Run facial recognition. Track his path," Eleanor ordered.

Marcus tapped the screen, fast-forwarding the footage. "After the ambulance left, the boy sprinted three blocks north. He entered a corporate building."

Marcus zoomed in on the glass doors. Eleanor’s blood suddenly ran ice cold.

It was the headquarters of Vance Real Estate. Her own company.

"Why was he going into my building?" Eleanor whispered, a dark, terrifying suspicion creeping into her mind.

"I pulled the building's lobby logs, ma'am," Marcus explained, his face turning grim. "The boy's name is Julian Hayes. He was carrying a rent payment. He lives in one of your low-income properties on the South Side. But... he arrived fifteen minutes late."

"And?" Eleanor pressed, her heart hammering against her ribs.

"And your son, Richard, was the one who met with him," Marcus revealed softly. "I just checked the property management system. Richard officially filed an eviction notice for Julian and his mother at 9:15 AM. He kicked them out."
