Chapter 7 - The Eviction

The noon sun baked the cracked pavement outside the rundown apartment building on the South Side.
Julian stood on the dirty sidewalk, tears streaming down his face. He was still wearing his grey hoodie and dark cargo pants. Next to him stood his mother, Sarah, looking incredibly frail and exhausted. Surrounded by three pathetic cardboard boxes holding all their worldly possessions, they had absolutely nowhere to go.
Suddenly, a sleek, silver Mercedes pulled up to the curb.
Richard stepped out of the driver’s seat. He wore a smug, arrogant grin, holding a clipboard. He loved watching the people he evicted physically leave the property. It made him feel powerful.
"Well, well, well," Richard mocked, walking up to the crying mother and son. "Look at the time. Twelve-oh-five. I'm glad to see you packed your trash and got off my property. I already have a new tenant willing to pay double for your unit."
"You didn't have to do this," Sarah wept, pulling Julian tightly against her side. "He had the money! He was only late because he stopped to help someone who was dying!"
Richard laughed out loud, adjusting his expensive suit jacket.
"I told the little brat this morning," Richard sneered, completely devoid of mercy. "I don't care if he stopped to perform open-heart surgery on the sidewalk. Rules are rules. In the real world, nobody cares about your pathetic excuses. You are weak, and weak people belong on the street."
Julian glared at the billionaire, his tiny fists balled in pure, helpless anger.
"Enjoy the homeless shelter," Richard smirked, turning around to walk back to his Mercedes.

But before Richard could even touch his car door, a massive, custom-built black Cadillac Escalade violently swerved up onto the curb, blocking the Mercedes in completely.
