Chapter 2 - The Missed Deadline

The elderly woman was completely pale and trembling, her eyes rolling back as she struggled desperately for a single breath of air.

Julian’s tiny hands shook violently, but his compassion completely overrode his panic. He grabbed his cheap cell phone from his cargo pants and dialed 911, screaming the street intersection to the emergency operator.

Once the ambulance was dispatched, Julian threw his phone down. He reached out and grabbed the woman’s shaking, icy hand, squeezing it tightly to ground her in reality.

"Please don't die," Julian whispered, tears welling in his innocent eyes. "Help is coming."

The woman looked up at the young boy with frightened, fading eyes. Surrounded by adults in expensive suits who had stepped right over her, she felt an overwhelming wave of gratitude that this tiny child in a grey hoodie was the only one who stopped to save her.

In the blurred background, the wailing sirens finally pierced the city noise. An ambulance violently pulled up to the curb, its red and white lights flashing against the green trees. Two paramedics in green and yellow EMS uniforms rushed out, carrying a heavy medical stretcher and a defibrillator.

Julian kept his eyes completely fixed on the woman, entirely ignoring the fact that the clock on the bank sign across the street now read 9:07 AM. He was officially late. His family was ruined.

As the paramedics lifted her onto the stretcher, the woman weakly squeezed Julian's hand, silently thanking the boy who had just saved her life.
