Chapter 4 - The Eviction Notice

Richard stood up from his leather chair. The imposing, ruthless landlord walked around the desk, towering over the terrified ten-year-old boy.

He casually picked up the envelope of cash, weighed it in his hand, and then violently threw it right back at Julian’s chest. The envelope hit the floor, scattering bills across the expensive carpet.

"I don't run a charity, boy," Richard stated coldly, entirely devoid of human empathy. "My properties are for people who respect my time and my rules. I told your mother yesterday that if the cash wasn't on my desk by nine o'clock sharp, you were out. You failed."

"Mr. Vance, please!" Julian sobbed, dropping to his knees to desperately gather the scattered money. "We don't have anywhere else to go! My mom can't sleep on the street!"

"That sounds like a personal problem," Richard sneered, walking over and opening the heavy glass door of his office. "You have exactly two hours to pack your garbage and vacate my building. If you are still inside the unit at noon, I will have the police arrest your mother for trespassing."

Julian stared at the billionaire, utterly shattered. He had done the right thing. He had saved a life. And his reward was losing everything his family had left in the world.

"You're a monster," Julian whispered, clutching his backpack.

"I'm a businessman," Richard corrected him with a wicked smirk. "Now get out of my office before I call security to throw you down the stairs."

Julian walked out of the towering corporate building, completely broken. He had to go home and tell his sick, struggling mother that because he stopped to help a stranger, they were homeless.
