Chapter 19 - darkness pays the price

In stark contrast to Harrison's brilliant return, the lives of Julian and Claire were now nothing but deadly blackness and despair. The federal court had officially sentenced them to life in prison.

In his cold, dark solitary confinement cell, Julian huddled in the corner, his body gaunt, his eyes deeply sunken and soulless. He had lost everything: fame, money, freedom, and human dignity.

Claire, in the women's prison block, fared no better. She constantly suffered from nightmares about the cruel nights she locked little Chloe in the basement. The torment of her conscience and the harshness of prison had driven her to the brink of insanity.

No family members came to visit; no high-society friends sent words of encouragement. They had been forever forgotten by this world, buried in the very trash of their own greed and cowardly jealousy.

Harrison read the news of the sentencing in the morning paper. He calmly folded the paper and tossed it into the trash. The dark past and the traitors had been completely erased from his mind. The punishment of karma is always fair.
