Chapter 5 - The Eavesdropping Maid

Later that evening, the mansion was quiet.

Sophia had just finished putting little Mia to sleep on a cot in the staff quarters. She walked softly down the dim hallway toward the main office to collect the remaining coffee cups.

As she approached the heavy mahogany doors of Vincent's office, she heard voices. She froze, pressing her back against the dark wood paneling, not wanting to interrupt the boss.

Inside the office, Vincent was speaking with Carmine, his most trusted underboss. Carmine was a slick, arrogant man in his forties, currently pouring himself a glass of expensive bourbon.

"The new shipment arrives tomorrow, Vincent," Carmine said smoothly. "We'll double our profits by the end of the month."

"Good," Vincent replied, his voice tired and hollow.

Carmine took a sip of his drink, a cruel, highly calculated smirk touching his lips. "You know, boss, it’s been three years. You need to stop mourning that traitor. Elena got exactly what she deserved for stealing from this family."

Sophia stopped breathing. She covered her mouth with her hands.

Through the slight crack in the mahogany doors, Sophia could see Carmine’s reflection in the massive window. She saw the absolute, terrifying arrogance in his eyes.
