Chapter 7 - The Cornered Maid

The conversation inside the office stopped dead.

"Who's out there?" Carmine barked, his voice instantly turning lethal.

Sophia panicked. She tried to sprint down the hallway, but before she could take three steps, the heavy mahogany doors were violently yanked open.

Carmine reached out, his massive hand grabbing Sophia by her maid uniform. He violently dragged the terrified woman into the office, throwing her hard onto the expensive rug.

"Spying on the boss?" Carmine sneered, pulling a heavy, suppressed handgun from his suit jacket and aiming it directly at Sophia's head.

"No! Please!" Sophia wept pathetically, holding her hands up to protect her face. "I was just getting the coffee cups!"

Vincent stood up from behind his massive desk. He didn't look angry; he looked highly suspicious.

"Put the gun away, Carmine," Vincent commanded coldly. He looked down at the trembling maid. "What did you hear, Sophia?"

Carmine stepped closer to her, his finger tightening on the trigger. "She's a rat, Vincent. Let me handle her, just like I handled the last traitor."

Sophia looked at the barrel of the gun, and then she looked at Vincent. She thought about her three-year-old daughter sleeping in the staff quarters. If she died right now, Mia would be completely alone. The terrified maid completely vanished. A fierce, brave mother fully awakened.
