Chapter 3 - The Coward's Betrayal
"Naomi, please," Theo whispered frantically, stepping forward in his heavy gray overcoat. "Are they... are they mine?"
"Don't you dare speak to them," Naomi hissed aggressively, her voice dropping to a freezing, lethal frequency that completely dominated the bakery. She stepped protectively in front of Eli and his twin brother, shielding them with her teal coat.
To understand the absolute, unhinged cruelty currently freezing the blood in Theo's veins, one had to look back exactly six years ago. Theo and Naomi were deeply in love, engaged to be married. But when Naomi joyfully announced she was pregnant, Theo didn't celebrate.
He completely panicked. He had just been offered a massive executive promotion at his corporate firm, on the explicit condition that he marry the CEO's wealthy, arrogant daughter, Victoria.
Theo didn't break up with Naomi gently. He completely abandoned her. He locked her out of their shared apartment, emptied their joint bank accounts, and sent a vicious legal cease-and-desist letter forbidding her from ever contacting him again. He explicitly told her to "get rid of the problem" because he was never going to pay a single dime of child support.
He married Victoria two months later, genuinely believing he had permanently erased Naomi from his perfect, multi-million-dollar life.
"I didn't know you had twins," Theo choked out, staring at the two identical boys with profound, undeniable shock.
