Chapter 6 - The Blue Notebook

"He lied to you because he's a coward," Naomi explained flawlessly, completely ignoring Theo's pathetic weeping. "But that isn't the worst thing he did."

Naomi gently placed her hand on the shoulder of her second son, the twin in the blue jacket who was clutching the spiral notebook.

"When Theo emptied our joint bank accounts six years ago," Naomi whispered, her voice cracking with heavy, undeniable emotion, "he didn't just steal my savings. He stole the massive medical fund I had set up when the ultrasounds showed complications."

Theo’s eyes widened in pure, unadulterated terror. He hadn't known about any complications.

"Leo," Naomi said softly to the twin in the blue jacket. "Show the lady your notebook."

The five-year-old boy bravely stepped forward. He didn't speak. He opened the small spiral notebook and held it up to Victoria.

A tight close-up captured the pages of the notebook. It wasn't filled with childish drawings. It was a communication book, filled with basic words and pictures.

"Leo is completely deaf," Naomi stated clinically, staring directly into Theo's horrified eyes. "He was born with a severe, highly correctable auditory nerve defect. If I had the money you stole from me, he could have had the cochlear implant surgery when he was two. But because you wanted a massive corporate wedding, my son lives in total silence."
