Chapter 2 - The Eight-Month Exile

The cinematic realism of the suffocating tension gripped the quiet bedroom.

“Lincoln Park?” Adrian repeated, a cynical, arrogant smirk touching the corner of his mouth. “I canceled your black cards eight months ago. You don’t have the capital to rent a parking space in Lincoln Park, let alone a condo.”

To understand his sheer, toxic confidence, one had to look back at the last eight months. Adrian had abruptly filed for divorce and relocated to his London office to oversee a massive international acquisition. He had completely exiled his wife, freezing her assets and ignoring her calls, convinced by his manipulative Vice President of Operations that his wife had been secretly siphoning funds from his accounts.

He had expected to return to Chicago today and find a weeping, desperate woman begging for a settlement.

Instead, he found a woman who didn't need him at all.

“I have my own company, too,” she stated off-camera, her voice echoing with absolute, undeniable authority.

A tight close-up captured Adrian’s face. The arrogant irritation instantly vanished, violently replaced by sheer, breathless disbelief. His dark eyes darted across the room, trying to process this impossible information. As he looked down, his gaze dropped toward a sleek, closed leather folder resting on the mattress directly beside her black suitcase.

“What’s in that folder?” Adrian demanded, taking a heavy step forward.

His wife became completely still. Her natural breathing hitched for a microscopic second.

A tight insert shot focused on the closed leather cover. Inside that folder was an ultrasound photograph of a baby girl—a massive, life-altering secret she had harbored alone for eight grueling months. Adrian’s hand began reaching toward the folder, his silver watch gleaming in the sunlight.

At the very edge of the frame, his wife tightened her grip on the edge of the cardboard packing box, her knuckles turning white.

👉 Before Adrian’s fingers could even brush the leather, a pair of expensive high heels clicked loudly into the room.
