Chapter 4 - The Cash Purchase

“Such a brave face,” Vanessa mocked, trailing a manicured fingernail over the edge of a packing box. She looked up at Adrian, batting her eyelashes. “Did she tell you where she’s going, darling? Probably moving back into her sister's cramped apartment in the suburbs.”
“She said she’s moving to Lincoln Park,” Adrian muttered, his voice tense, his eyes still locked on his wife. “And that she has her own company.”
Vanessa burst into a loud, theatrical fit of laughter that echoed obnoxiously against the bare walls.
“A company? What, an online knitting blog?” Vanessa mocked cruelly, looking at the pale-blue knitted fabric of the wife’s dress. “And Lincoln Park? Adrian, she’s lying to save face. You froze her accounts. The cheapest condo in that zip code is three million dollars.”
His wife didn't flinch. She reached out, her delicate gold necklace catching the soft daylight, and gently pulled the leather folder closer to her side of the table, safely away from Adrian’s reach.
“The penthouse was five point two million, actually,” his wife stated flawlessly, her voice smooth and entirely devoid of human mercy. “And I paid for it in cash. Last Tuesday.”
The cinematic realism of the suffocating, paralyzing silence gripped the bedroom.
Adrian physically staggered backward. His jaw literally unhinged. Five million dollars in pure cash was a staggering amount of liquid capital, even for a billionaire. He had spent eight months believing she was utterly destitute, entirely dependent on whatever meager divorce settlement he eventually decided to toss her way.

“You’re lying,” Vanessa snapped, her fake, high-society smile violently fracturing. “There is absolutely no way you generated that kind of capital. You don't know the first thing about business!”
👉 His wife gave a small, chilling smile, preparing to drop a nuclear bomb on their multi-billion-dollar empire.
